  • Seoul's offer rejected

     SEOUL (AP) -- North Korea rejected South Korea's proposal that it stage some of the 2002 World Cup matches, a South Korean soccer official said today after a visit to the reclusive communist country.
     "North Korea said the proposal was unrealistic at this moment because of political tension and limited time," said Chung Mong-joon, head of South Korea's soccer association.

    Olympic hoping for goal Rush

     SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Former Liverpool star Ian Rush will play two matches in Australia's national league on a visit to promote his soccer finishing schools.
     The 38-year-old Welshman will turn out for leading club Sydney Olympic on Sunday against Marconi and on Dec. 4 against Adelaide.

    Drillers hoping to water down Wave

     The Edmonton Drillers undertake the Drive for Five as they host the Milwaukee Wave at Skyreach Centre tonight (7:05).
     The 4-0 Drill are coming off a 14-8 win over Milwaukee Wednesday and are the only undefeated team in the 12-team NPSL. There's no question the local side would like nothing better than to go undefeated on the homestand and keep their unblemished record intact.

    Galaxy makes it back to championship

     FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Making the Major League Soccer title game in the league's first year may have worked against the Los Angeles Galaxy.
     "When you're a young player and you get to a championship game in your first year ... I'm sure there was an expectation in many of their minds that this is going to become an annual event," Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid said t as his team prepared for Sunday's MLS Cup against D.C. United.

    Lazio vs. Roma, Juventus vs. Milan on big Sunday

     ROME (AP) -- Buenos Aires or Sao Paolo might be a more apt setting than Rome's Olympic Stadium for this weekend's top Serie A clash.
     When cross-city rivals Lazio of Rome and AS Roma square off, the game will have the feel of a South American derby.

    Lucky England under fire

     LONDON (AP) -- Kevin Keegan came under fire Thursday after his first defeat as England soccer coach, even though the team still qualified for the European Championship through the back door.
     England lost 1-0 at home to Scotland on Wednesday night yet advanced to the finals having beaten the Scots 2-0 at Hampden Park in last Saturday's first leg of the playoff.

    Romario signs with Vasco da Gama

     RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- Star forward Romario, released by Flamengo earlier in the week, signed Thursday with Vasco da Gama, the team where he got his start.
     Romario, 33, agreed to a one-year contract that could be expended for a year, He was let go by Flamengo on Tuesday for sneaking out of training camp to go to a nightclub.

    Kanu vs. Juninho as Gunners meet Boro

     LONDON (AP) -- The last time Nwankwo Kanu and Juninho met competitively on a soccer field was a memorable semifinal between Nigeria and Brazil at the 1996 Olympics.
     Before 86,000 fans at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga., Kanu inspired Nigeria's 4-3 win from 3-1 down with a last minute equalizer and extra time "golden goal".
